Garth O’Brien
The Washington State DUI Blog will publish announcements of new legal developments affecting the crime of Driving Under the Influence. Articles will also highlight celebrity DUI arrests, and local tragedies involving impaired driving. A majority of the postings will offer the opinion of Garth O’Brien; a former prosecuting attorney and former DUI defense lawyer.
Garth began his legal career as a Public Defender with Northwest Defenders Association servicing the Seattle Municipal Court. When his contract was nearing expiration he accepted a position with the Seattle City Attorney’s office in the criminal division. For two years Garth prosecuted misdemeanor crimes as a trial deputy. Garth conducted well over 100 jury trials and managed a voluminous caseload. His courtroom presence and legal mind drew attention from the defense bar.
In 2002, Garth O’Brien joined a premiere DUI defense law firm in the Seattle region. Soon he was charging clients $4,000 to $6,500 for a retainer and required an additional trial fee. Private practice also provided educational opportunities.
Garth attended the prestigious “Mastering Scientific Evidence in DUI Cases” conference. Garth is a two time graduate of the National College of DUI Defense. He is certified to administer the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, and received training as a Drug Recognition Expert. Garth also is one of a handful of Washington attorneys that completed the “Science of Evidential Breath Alcohol Testing” program of National Patent Analytical Systems (NPAS). NPAS manufactures the breath test machines employed by Washington State law enforcement. Completing this esteemed program certified Garth O’Brien to operate the BAC DataMaster breath testing device. He can also perform calibrations and diagnostic checks on the device.
During his DUI practice Garth was recognized by the following publications:
- Washington Law & Politics, “Rising Star Attorney” 2004, 2005, 2006 & 2007
- Seattle Magazine, “Seattle’s Top Lawyers” 2005
In 2006, Garth O’Brien discontinued practicing law actively, and transitioned into the software & technology industry. However, he maintains this DUI Blog and the website Washington State DUI to increase public awareness about the dangers of Driving Under the Influence.
